Traditional Upholstery

Traditional upholstery is typically used for antique and some vintage furniture, although some modern makers are now returning to these methods to create more sustainable and long-lasting pieces.

Processes have evolved over centuries and I carefully select the most appropriate approach based on the age and design of each piece. Using layers of webbing, tied springs and natural materials such as horsehair and coir (coconut husk), I build each foundation by hand with specialist stitching.

While these methods are more time-intensive than modern alternatives, they offer exceptional comfort and durability that will last for many years to come. 

Sustainable Vintage Upholstery

Furniture made after the 1950s is highly fashionable, but usually with petrochemical foams that can degrade into toxic dust within 10 years and end up in landfill or have to be specially incinerated.  

For this reason, I aim to minimise the use of synthetic materials and can guide you towards natural alternatives that offer heirloom quality and healthier living.
